The First Amendment

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

It is illegal for Congress to make a law that establishes an official religion, stops people from practicing their religion, stops allowing people to practice freedom of speech, stops the press from printing whatever they want, or does not grant people the right to assemble or petition.

I think it's funny to watch people get so wound up about political correctness. I agree with this viewpoint to an extent. But at the same time freedom of speech protects some of the least popular opinions, and that includes both those who support political correctness and those who do not.

I chose this next cartoon because it is focused on a current controversial issue in the United States. Many people believe that people like Colin Kaepernick should not have the right to refuse to stand up during the National Anthem. This cartoon challenges that point of view by mentioning the extraordinary freedoms we have in America... (including freedom to not stand up during the National Anthem!) whether it be a protest against the oppression due to race, gender, or sexual orientation.
